The 88 Films Blu-Ray Thread

Yeah, I wish that I would have thought about getting these directly from 88 before. Am curious if there slip covers are like a box or just a normal slip cover? Pretty cool, either way! Does anyone know if the free shipping takes longer from 88 Films directly than it would if it was equivalent shipping from Amazon? And, how is the packaging for shipment? Amazon just always throws the movie in a box and sends it out without any bubble wrap or anything. Normally there is not a problem, but, Seeding of a Ghost was cracked at the bottom. I will have to get a replacement disc for it at some point.

I ordered Mighty Peking Man on the 2d of March and I received it on the 6th of March.

The movie was in a carton box looking like an enelope, but no bubble wrap...

By the way, the back side of the cover of Mighty Peking Man is very beautiful !

Got note of KC shipped too and agree about MPM. It was released over here on dvd many years ago but never bought it. Considering 88 release seriously, artwork is really nice.

Now waiting besides Constable to arrive for pre-order of Masked Avengers appearing to 88website.

That is great price with shipping included and with full price I rather buy these films than hollywood ones. Slipcase looks great and better support 88directly than through amazon:wink.

Actually even as amazon does sometimes sales for £8.99 tag if you just buy one item, shipping makes it equal to £14.99 in 88shop(and no slips in amazon...and then there are those skullpoints):monk_toasting:

Just pre-ordered this directly from 88 Films, slipcase, free shipping and direct support to them were good reasons to erase item in my Amazon shopping cart... :laugh

Actually bought HOUSE OF TRAPS and FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS from Amazon without slip. Just out of curiosity, did anyone get slipcases for these by ordering directly from 88 ??

No slipcases for me for these two titles, but maybe i missed the ones with slipcases because I didn't ordered them when they were in the preorder section...

It looks like the first releases from preorders are sold with slipcases, as it happened for Mighty Peking Man and Killer Constable.

Got my notice too! Totally not expecting it until I first read your post. Then, I had to go and check my email. Exciting stuff! If all goes well then I am going to be ordering from them directly in the future for pre-orders; especially if they are offering slips. Shout Factory does a similar thing where if you order directly from them they ship out the release sometimes either a few weeks early or even a month early. This is really a nice trend and I hope it continues.

I'll try to post it, but I'm not sure to succeed...I'm not very keen on new technologies...

This made my day :monk_swinging:  Thanks Angela!

Edit: I'm personally wanting them to lean slightly more to the side of horror given that (at least in the case of the Shaw Bros) many films are much less known to an outside audience and receive less new releases on DVD/Blu Ray than martial arts. Also, 88 Films specialize in the horror element so they will really be filling their niche.

Cool! I think those are what I would have expected. Good news then!? Does the disc pan out, otherwise? Are the extras good and everything looks normal? No incorrect audio track or anything like that, right?

Awesome news! I prefer the kung fu films. But, some more horror would be alright. Chor Yuen would fit in nicely with that blend of horror/fantasy and kung-fu. More Lau Kar-leung, Sun Chung and Chor Yuen films. Those artists are very un-represented on blu-ray. Too bad they can't release some of the missing titles. I would love to see Revenge of the Corpse and To Kill a Mastermind. But, unless someone springs for the restoration, then it will probably never see the light of day again. Or, if someone can find that missing minute of Avenging Eagle and get it put back into the film and release that. Anyways, looking forward to seeing what they will release next.

That would be very wallet friendly, I would buy none. All his best films are released by tokyo shock&dragon dynasty and as those are quality releases no reason to upgrade them as not that huge fan of director.

Chu Yuan would fit into their catalogue nicely. In future releases too extras hardly are going to contain anything more than trailer+audiocommentary. 88 is company with few people only and have lot work to handle slasher+italian collection as well...

Got last week their bluray of amuck!(italian movie) and from preview transfer looks great, hopefully postman delivers Killer Constable in few days-

To each his own! But, PQ is better on iTunes than those Region 1 dvd`s. Not a night and day improvement, but an improvement. So, I would imagine that a blu-ray would be just a little bit better still. I would certainly spend my money to upgrade as LKL is my favorite kung fu Shaw Brothers director.

As far as extras go, who knows. How many times are they going to have Bey Logan do commentary? His expertise is with the Golden Harvest stuff, I think. I just hope that he doesn't end up in Ric Meyers territory on these releases if he is in a little bit over his head. Funny about the trailers, because I don't think that any of them have have been the original theatrical ones, just those made for home video promotions. A let down on that end of it. I would be ok with just the movie itself unless there was a quality extra. Otherwise, it just takes up space on the disc, when they could be using that for bit rate. 88 dropped the ball on the audio for Seeding of a Ghost, but, otherwise, is a fine release. I like it that they are at least making the effort. The booklets have been a nice touch along with slipcovers for those that pre-order from their site.

Yeah, can't wait for mine to arrive too.

Yeah! It`s here! Awesome! Mine was packed by Gabbie. :smile Shout out to Gabbie, wherever you are! First time ordered from 88 Films and that was a pretty quick turn-around for a pre-purchase and free shipping. A lot quicker than Amazon with their "free" shipping. Looks like I will be ordering again from them directly if the free shipping will still be in effect for future purchases. Might even buy from them if it is not. Nice little slipcover.

I just started watching but am going to play my iTunes version along with the movie to see if there are any differences. Also, will be listening to Bey`s commentary. Probably won't get it all finished tonight. But, that is ok. Just really glad that it is here!

On Bey`s commentary - Ok, noticed one thing...if anyone else can check this out to make sure that I am not losing my hearing, but it sounds like Bey`s volume drops right before Chen Kuan-tai makes his entrance in the film. The drop in volume is only on Bey`s commentary and not the English or Chinese audio tracks. Otherwise, informative commentary.

I don`t find post now where 88 slipcovers for first Shaw titles were discussed but they had some fundraising campaign last year. I think most if not all slips went for those who attended into it..Not sure if 300 were printed or only 150..

As some ziieagle films are reportedly in condition no proper br could me made, what I would want to see from 88; shaolin temple(dub at times makes more sense than subtitled IVL, rare case), chinatown kid - ultimate edition and avenging eagle(uncut). Black Butterfly and sword mates don`t dare to dream of...

Of horror, "haunted tales" would be amazing.

Criminals serie also welcomed.

First things first=masked avengers:smile

In future going to get all Shaws feel I need directly from 88 free shipping or not, for Italian titles may use amazon.

Just picked up 5 of the new 88 Films BDs - wow, they are just incredible!  Bravo!

And thanks for the heads-up: I may very well start ordering from 88 Films themselves!

Awesome!!!!

So far I already bought 6 of their BD.

I already ordered 5 so yesterday I decided to bite the bullet and get the other 2. However, "Seeding of a Ghost" is currently out of stock (great - that means that they must be selling).
So "Mighty" was ordered yesterday, "Hex", "HoT", "BM" & "5EN" have already been delivered, "Killer Constable" should be delivered within the next day or so & I will get "Seeding" when it gets back in stock.

And then "Masked Avenger" when it is released.
