While not strictly classic but Shaw, I watched Monkey Kung Fu. Pretty fantastic UPTO the finale when they undercranked to silly levels. I Highly reccommend the the rest of the film! Thanks Kingofkungfu2002 for another top movie! Taken me a while to see it, huh!

One of the best bits- pure Shaw Brothers for me, like must-be-in-a-SB-show reel-good is the bit where student and teacher train side by side, performing the Monkey Style as the sunsets behind them. Their form in this sequence is truly stunning! Don't you guys love that scene?

Are you talking about "Mad Monkey Kung Fu"? Where Pops and Hsiao Ho train side by side, one of my favorite training scenes ever, love the part where Ho finally gets through and punches Pops a couple times, pops stops and smiles at him and Ho falls to his knees in respect!

Isn't there also a movie called Monkey Kung Fu?

I assumed he was talking about the very beginning of Monkey Kung Fu which was what grabbed me and made me watch the film, after trying several movies beforehand and not feeling them.

Monkey Kung Fu is a different movie. Hau Chiu Sing and Ching Siu Tung does Monkey forms at sunset.

My bad- I thought he said MAD MONKEY KUNG FU, and that's the film I was referring to. Yes Tosh, that bit is kung fu movie perfection!

I watched "Magnificent Ruffians" for the first time today and, sadly, I think it's one of the weaker Venoms films. Even the choreography didn't look up to parr compared to some of their other films.

Luckily, I'm an hour into "The Rebel Intruders" and it's delivering the goods.

Mag Ruffs is stronger dramatically, than in the action department. Rebel Intruders is a more well balanced venom effort, no doubt.

I don`t think rebel intruders is nowhere as good as ruffians. Action is fine on intruders but it takes place mostly in the end of movie, almost nothing happens before it. And in nonaction scenes..well, storyline not that interesting and movie has close to zero level in tension.

I would not call it more balanced, but thats just me.

Ruffians on the other hand gives good storyline, there is less minutes of action than in rebel intruders but it happens through movie and not emphasis in the end.

I suppose it's a matter of what you prefer. I felt as though there was hardly any action at all throughout "Magnificent Ruffians" and, when there was, it pretty substandard stuff.

I'm all for strong drama but I just didn't enjoy the plot of this one at all. It felt really claustrophobic.

Granted, "The Rebel Intruders" isn't Shakespeare but I like that there's a strong sense of peril throughout and I feel as though there's enough action scattered here and there to keep me well entertained.

Just watched Shaolin Temple (Shaw Bros-1976) aka Death Chambers the other day. I forgot just how many great kung fu actors had supporting roles in this movie well before they become widely known. Chiang Sheng, Lee Yi Min, Kuo Chui, Lo Meng, and John Lui just to name a few. The production value is huge and feels like a real kung fu epic. With over 150 classic kung fu movies in my collection it gets tough to watch each of them often enough but this one is a gem I haven't seen in awhile..

I must admit I loved both Magnificent Ruffians and Rebel Intruders but I didn't think the beginning of Magnificent Ruffians was particularly gripping. I remember initially being very disappointed but by the tail end of the movie and particularly the finale, I found it very, very good. Whereas I enjoyed Rebel Intruders throughout the entire film.

Man, that's nothing...

Wait until you have a few hundred. That's when you begin to rationalize which titles you really fancy.

Just watched Martial Club for the 1st time. WOW!!!! What a killer flick. This is full of outstanding choreography! This is some of the best fu I've seen Kara Hui perform. And the end fight was a fantastic duel of styles! Love that kind of stuff. Films like this put me more and more in the mood for "old school" kung fu films.:nerd:

Yea, I liked Kara Hui peformance in that movie also!! I watched the Challenger over the weekend, I really loved LillyLi's performance in that, she seemed to have a look in her eye that drove me crazy!! She took some hits in this movie, my favorite is when David Chiang clocks her one as he jumps out a window and shouts "get out the way!"

Watched Challenge of the Masters last night. I think this is my favorite Gordon Liu movie, although I plan to see Martial Club tonight. It has been a while since I have watched either. I really enjoyed everything about COTM, the cast I loved, the picture was beautiful, the dubbing was spot on, I followed the story easily, great!!

Lion Versus Lion – my expectations weren't too high for this one going into it, so I found it a decent kung fu movie but I feel it could have been much, much better. I also thought the lion dance section of the film did drag on far too long especially without delivering much excitement.

hmm... That was my favorite part of the movie,(outside the fu, which I thought was excellent) I LOVED the Lion Dance sequence!! Yea,its like 15 minutes long, but I really get into watching this one. Does anyone know if Wang Lung Wei and Lo Mang actually do the dance or are doubles used?? I thought both were AWESOME!!

The Loot – a good to very good kung fu film, not quite living up to expectations. Some of the fights seemed way to over choreographed but the finale was very entertaining.

36 Chamber of Shaolin– very good movie and one that has been long overdue a re-watch.

Shaolin Mantis – honestly, I found this very overrated. It's a decent, solid film and a reasonable way to spend an hour and a half. However, David Chiang really doesn't look like he's got the skills of a top martial arts star. I could be wrong but he hasn't impressed me all that much in what I have seen of him.I personally wouldn't recommend it but that's just me, probably the only person on the forum saying this.

I would not say it`s very overrated. Some have it in toplist but many others do not. I have feeling in this forum it`s not liked generally that much.

It`s decent movie and I am fan of David Chiang but honestly I would not put in top5 of LKL. Of less talked LKL movies at least challenge of the masters and martial club are superior.

Loot is OKAY(chiang is obviously stuntdoubled in some fight scenes), more or less same team made "the challenger" which I like little bit more. Fair value of money as those were less than 10€ each.

The appeal of Shaolin Mantis is less about the players' physical ability and more about the creative choices in action direction. Each exchange shows an awareness of camera angles that is probably better than anything else in LKL's career but I could never say this for certain.

As I said I think it's a decent movie but given it was rated the 15th best Shaw Bros movie rated by forum members here I expected better, so definitely feels overrated to me.

Watch end fight of Shaolin Mantis again, DC vs Lau Kar Wing; doubtful something of that compexiity will ever be pulled off again - look at the length of the takes & number of movements; some of LKL's best work; DC is a legend for pulling it off. Also Lau Kar Wing's fight with the couple trying to leave & Lily Li, the interaction of dramatic plot device & storytelling at the same time as the kung elevates the whole - who else did that stuff? It is a masterwork.

Martial Arts of Shaolin – I watched the remastered Dragon Dynasty and the difference between this and my old DVD is like night and day! It was almost like watching the film for the first time it was so different in terms of how good the picture looked. I really enjoyed everything about the film from the cinematography, to the choreography and not overdoing the comedy. Jet looked great performing largely grounded martial arts.it's a shame about some of the under cranking, I thought I saw something that LKL didn't do that in his movies… I must have been wrong. Overall a very good film and well overdue a re-watch.
