Member saltysam Posted July 9, 2017 Member Posted July 9, 2017 Just rewatched this, the Dubbed Soulblade version. Quality is poor but at least it's widescreen. The film itself is a major feat in that you would think it would be pretty impossible to produce such a poor kung fu movie with such a talented cast, yet the filmmakers managed it. Still historically i suppose it's fairly important and i would like to see an improved quality version someday. I still love Kurata's line to Unicorn during their battle " for a boxer you make a great long distance sprinter" 4 Quote

I doubt Lee directed any fights, probably just made a few suggestions. None of the fights look any different to those seen in other low budget moves of the era. Which says that Lee probably just made suggestions or contributed to sections of some fights. If there was more of the behind the scenes footage, we could varify more of what Bruce Lee contributed in terms of the on-screen content. He may have given more ideas to the movies story/script?. Betty Ting Pei & Bruce Lee style/cut Unicorn Chan's hair, for his role in Fist Of Unicorn(1972). 5 Quote

I like the photo! Thanks for posting it. 3 Quote

I like the photo! Thanks for posting it. Thats a good point and I would have felt the same, had I not read this great piece about Unicorn Chan. It mentions Lee giving the studio a script for the movie, how true this is? or where its sourced from I'm not sure?. That said, he clearly wasn't going to just give them one of his best scripts/projects. I should have included this link in my last post. Member Killer Meteor Posted July 9, 2017 Member Posted July 9, 2017 I think Lee may have been involved with the tussle between Unicorn and the chubby "Japanese" guy...which doesn't say much about his choreography skills, but then Bruce was never very good at making others look good. The fight between Hapkido masters Ji Han-Jae and Wong In-Sik is phoney and full of obvious special effects gimmicks. Yasuaki Kurata's fight is awesome but you know he could have Unicorn for breakfast. Besides the great soundtrack, a lot of my enjoyment of this film comes from Ted Thomas's wacky dubbing! 5 Quote
Member Killer Meteor Posted July 12, 2017 Member Posted July 12, 2017 And what the hell happened in that scene where "Bruce" trains Unicorn? It seems to have been hacked about so that you never see him talk in a shot - the sound sync is non-existent! 4 Quote

Member DragonClaws Posted March 1, 2018 Member Posted March 1, 2018 (edited) The newspaper article in the first post, was put together by a BL fan known as Phil (I dont know his last name). He runs the following Blog, which also takes a look at other Lee related Hong Kong locations. He was approached by John Little, to help him find many of the locations seen in the Tracking The Dragon documetnary. Click on the link below, for more on Fist Of Uincorn, and other Little Dragon related stuff. Did the original theatrical release contain more footage?, all the current versions look have removed all but a few seconds of the BL material. Did they settle the legal case by allowing them to show just a few short clip's?, to avoid any kind of infringement. Member DragonClaws Posted August 31, 2019 Member Posted August 31, 2019 (edited) I wonder how much Goldstone Film's made from buying and releasing Unicorn Fist in U.S cinema's?. Using the same misleading promotional poster's tactic, that angered Bruce Lee back in Hong Kong. To lull then un-educated audiences into buying a ticket to watch it. With some film's having legal issues with the Estate in the mid 70's, how did they get this one out?. Imagine the disappointment of expecting to see a Bruce Lee directed/choreographed movie, then getting Unicorn Fist instead. (Image Lnk Expired) Edited May 15, 2021 by DragonClaws 1 Quote

Different sources say different thing's, there's footage of him with the crew on both the interior and exterior shoots. Reading through Mattew Polly's book at the moment, and he states a single day was the most he time he spent with the production. Of the many picture available from the making of the film. Some show Lee with a goatee beard, while on other he appears clean shaven. Maybe suggesting he was there mutple day's?. Did they film the interiors at Golden Harvest studio's?. There's shots of BL wearing the same outfit on the backlot at GH, probably taken the same day as the Fist of Unicorn set visit?. On set with veteran Hong Kong actor Wei Ping-Ao. With the goetee. With actress Kitty Meng Chui far left. On set with Unciorn Chan, looking more clean shaven. Outside the Golden Harvest soundstages. Edited September 1, 2019 by DragonClaws 1 Quote
Member mpm74 Posted September 2, 2019 Author Member Posted September 2, 2019 (edited) @DragonClaws good observations. If you look closely, the hair length has also changed. And one of the on-set photos doesn't show his necklace (below). In a way, it looks like the necklace was removed by way of Photoshop! Look closely. Or am I seeing things?
